Mastering is Quality Control, Translation, Balance and Enhancement. But most importantly it's about connecting an Artist with the listener.
Daz ‘Smudge’ Smith is a UK based Mastering Engineer and Educator in the field of Digital Mastering.
Smudge has been involved in the Music Industry for over a decade but his musical journey started long before.
His first musical memories were from a very young age having been influenced by the popular music of the early 90’s, such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Guns and Roses and Aerosmith (who he is a massive fan of).
Smudge is a keen musician and started to learn how to play guitar when he was 16 years old. He is a self taught Guitarist but was influenced by his great friend Mike (an amazing Blues Guitarist!) who turned him on to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. This experience started to broaden his taste for different musical genres and sent him down the Rabbit Hole in search of new styles to discover.
In his early 20’s Smudge started his Music Production journey by recording his own demos and riffs. As Smudge learnt more about DAW’s and Mixing and Mastering concepts, he quickly got the bug and pursued a new found passion for Audio Engineering.
Some 20 years later Smudge is now a Professional Mastering Engineer having worked on many great tracks for released artists.
In addition to his role as a Mastering Engineer, Smudge is a passionate educator in the realm of Digital Mastering and Digital Audio.
Smudge has released almost 100 hundred educational videos on his YouTube channel with followers from over 45 countries.

Outside of Mastering Smudge is a passionate family man and loves spending time with his wife and three children. He is an avid Gamer, Football (Soccer) fan and loves BBQ’s (and will frequently spend his summer afternoons in the garden with his BBQ whilst listening to music).
He also continues to work on writing his own music and is working on a full album to be released soon.
